Hello Jerry:

I just discovered your site. Thank you for providing this place for queries.

I am looking for information on Isak Herman Johansson, born 27 Mar 1856 in Segerstad, Skaraborg, Sweden. He married a woman named Elizabeth. They lived in Stockholm where he was a policeman (konstapel). He took the name Lenander (because his surname Johansson was so common).

Isak Herman's parents were Johannes Hansson Kjack (a soldier) (1793-1859) and Maria Isaksdotter, born 1819. They lived near Falkoping.

Isak Herman was the brother of my great grandfather, Lars Johan Johansson, who came to Rockford Illinois in 1882 from Falkoping. I would like to find descendants of Isak Herman, if any, as they would be cousins. I also would like to know about Isak's life as a policeman in Stockholm. Thank you for any information.

Hello Jerry,

Your site has been very useful in breaking done some of my families brick walls.

I'm looking for any information on still more of my fathers family.

What I'm looking for is information in regards to Lars Andersons parents.

Lars was born 1815-08-04 in Farhult, Malmohus Ian (Skane) to Anders Larsson and Troen Mansdotter.

I have found information that has Anders Larsson born 1756-11-30 in Jonstorp Parish.

Anders Larsson and Troen Mansdotter married 1814-10-15 in Vasby Parish.

Anders Larsson was the son of Lars Andersson and Ingar Fredricksdotter.

Lars and Ingar were married 1751-12-15 in Vigda i Jonstorp Parish.

If someone could please verify that this is correct and possibly find when and where

Lars Andersson and his wife Ingar Fredricksdotter were born. Who might their parents be?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Addition to 11/17/2006   below

I had a message in 2006 on your site.  I did not get a response, but recently hired a researcher at the Emicenter in Vörä, Finland who gave me quite a bit of information on my grandparents, Erick Wicklund and Ericka Hellman.  My Grandfather was Erik Widd from Vörä and changed his name in the US.  His father was Johan Johannsson
Widd from Kofjoki, Vörä and his mother Beata Eriksdotter Simons.  The father died in 1876 when Erik was about 2 1/2 and he was raised by a brother of his mother, Beata Eriksdotter Simons.  She went back to live with her parents.  I don't know if she ever remarried.  He had a brother Johan Widd and a sister Lisa.  Helge Wiklen from Jakobstad was some relation, but I am not sure exactly how.  Ericka was the daughter of Henrik Johansson Hellman Ohls and Johanna Karlsdotter Gastgifvars in Nykarleby Finland.  I'm still working on these lines.

Hi Jerry,

I am researching my Swedish ancestors but without much success.

I am looking for information about the parents, siblings, etc  of my great-grandfather.

His name is Carl August (Augustus) Petterson (Pettersson) and he was born in August 1857 at Karlskrona, Blekinge.

He left Sweden as a young seaman and settled in Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia in mid-1880’s.

I believe his father was named Aron and he may have owned or been employed in a workshop in Karlskrona that was involved in ship building or repair.

Carl had a brother named Otto, born 13 March 1861, who may have had a wife named Ingeborg.  Otto may have worked on the vessel “Oden”.  He died sometime between 1913 and 1927 and was buried in a cemetery in Stockholm.

Carl also had several sisters.  In June 1927 he travelled to Sweden and USA to visit them.  At Karlskrona he had an older sister who had married a shoemaker named Karlsson, and another sister there had married a contractor named Nelsson.

Two other sisters were named Svea and Ebba. One, or both, of them  had migrated to USA and Carl visited them at Randolph/Brockton near  Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

I would love to hear from anyone who can help me with information about my Swedish family.

Finding your web site is the best thing that has happened to me in my search for my Swedish ancestors.

I have been doing this on and off for several years with little success. Maybe someone on this network can help.

I am trying to trace my grandparents, Peter John Eklund and Sophia Alfvin – those are the names on their marriage certificate dated November 10, 1882 and issued in Chicago, Illinois, USA

It is believed that Peter Eklund, born January 16, 1856 (probably in Kronoberg, Sweden) emigrated from Sweden to the USA in 1881. Sophia, born June 20, 1856, in Kronoberg Sweden, emigrated in 1882, possibly with her brother, Peter M. Alfvin. Their father was Peter Magnus Alfven. Family history says Peter Magnus was a soldier in Sweden who took the name Alfven from the town Alfvestad, in Smaland. His birth surname is not known.

Both Peter Eklund and Sophia Alfvin may have changed their names upon arrival in the USA. It is possible Peter Eklund was born Peter Johan Ekelund and Sophia was born Sofie Johanna Alfven

I know this is not much to go on, but any help would be appreciated.    Arthur Siddon – email    asiddon@cox.net

I last posted on August 08, 2008.  I have since found the names and DOB of the other two siblings of my Grandfathers.
Clarence was born in Battle Creek on 22 Nov.1920, and died on 5 Dec. 1920
Leonora (Lena) was born in Chicago on 5 April 1919.
Charles R was born in Battle Creek on 1 Sept. 1922
(Charles R was my grandfather prior to the adoption – his name was changed to Merlin R)
I have found the grave site for Clarence.  I am still in search of if Leonora/Lenora/Lena is still living and the grave site for their mother, Hildur Matilda Forsberg (Hilda M Anderson).  She is believed to have moved back to Evanston, IL or the Chicago area after Sept 1 1922.  She may have remarried and that is why I am having a difficult time finding her.  If anyone has any information                       Angie Anderson Lane  angiea@almobilenotary.com

Hello Jerry: Could you help me find the parents of my great-grandfather, Karl Lindberg, born 29 August 1845 in Vastra Dalarna (no exact place); baptized in Zinkgruvan 27 July 1890 by Wickman; died 23 Sept. 1908.  I found the church (Baptist) in Godegard that he helped build and had donated the land for.  He may have been born in Grangarde??  Is that in Vastra Dalarna?  My name is Betty L. Rothacher and I live in California.  I know Sue Team.  She gave me your address.  I know that Karl came to US in 1901 through Ellis Island with my grandmother (his son's wife), Betty Sofia Lundgren Lindberg.  My grandfather must have come to US earlier but I have not been able to find Ellis island record for him.  His name was either Eli Lambert Lindberg or Lambert Eli Lindberg.  I would appreciate any help you could give me.

Hi Jerry,

I have hit a big brick wall with my great grandmother. My great grandfather was August Lindahl (Johannesson)1882 - 1965. His first wife before moving to Minnesota was Emelie Jonsdotter born in 1869. She also came from Sweden. But it is as if she just disappeared.

I would love any information and any other of the Johannesson lineage information would be wonderful.

Thanks so much, Barbara             christensen_barbara@comcast.net

Hi

I am currently researching my Norgren family history, and during my many ‘google’ searches I keep coming up with your web site and hoping you can help.

To start, My father’s name is Lawrence Stanley Norgren (born 1946 Northern Territory, Australia).  His father is Stanley Norgren (born 1908 South Australia).  Stanley married Lydia Mary Levinson in 1945.

Stanley’s father is John Edward Norgren.  (This is the person I am most interested in) John married in 1890 Elizabeth Hammond of Mt Lofty South Australia.

John and Elizabeth have the following children (All born in South Australia):

Elizabeth Annie b. 1892

John Edward b. 1894

Linda Florence b. 1897

Maude Josephine b. 1899

Tracey Joseph b. 1902

Norman b. 1904

Alice May b. 1906

Reginald b. 1908

And twin, Stanley b. 1908

On Stanley’s birth certificate, Johan Edvard Norgren was born in Christiansand, Norway.  I have ploughed through the Norwegian records and cannot find any details of a birth or emigration for him there.

I have recently obtained Johan’s Naturalization application (this can be viewed on line at http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/imagine.asp?B=33426&I=1&SE=1 ) and he states he was born in Byske, Sweden on 31 May 1862. He immigrated to South Australia on 28 Feb 1878 aboard the Norwegian Bark “India”. He was just 15 years.  It appears the shipping records for Port Adelaide for that time period were apparently destroyed, so finding them for confirmation and who he travelled with will be slim, unless there are records out of Sweden.  I do believe the naturalized John and my John Edward are the same person, as the birth places for his children match the places lived and there is no records of other John Norgren’s in Australia.  I am yet to find/obtain John’s marriage and death certificates, but I doubt they will tell me much.

This is where I hit a brick wall!  I am trying to obtain/search birth records for Sweden and am having little luck!

The only immigration record I found out of Norway was for Axel Norgren and he lived in QLD. I don’t think he is related (at this point, anyway).

Can anyone help, or have links to my tree? Please contact me by email       MRDClean@bigpond.net.au

I wait in anticipation and look forward to your reply J

 Take care Illara

Am hitting a little snag on a very early ancestors.

I am the 6th great granddaughter of:

Per Olufsson (Olofsson) Dahl, born abt 1684 in Torp and died 03 Feb 1744 in Honnerud (?).  He was in the military; company Valbo.

What I am now trying to search are his parents and siblings and who his wife was.  One of Per's sons was Hans Persson Dahl  born 1718 in Rännelanda and died 01 July 1785 in Holmen, Högsäter.

Appreciate any help.  It may be too early a time to research, but maybe someone has access to early church records.

Thanks so much for any help.

Jerry,

I've been working on our familie's ancestry since the passing of my dad, and I am running into a brick wall.

My great great grandfather was Lars Anderson. He was born 1816 in Sweden. Possibly Skane. I believe he immigrated somtime between 1865-1878. Have not been able to find any info regarding his immigration. On the 1880 census for Chicago,Il., he changed his name to Louis.

He was married to Betsy Johanson, b.1818 in Sweden.

Children of Lars and Betsy:

Nels b.1849 Skone

Anna b.1853 Sweden

Nellie b.1855 Sweden

John b.1858 Sweden

Ellen b.1860 Sweden

Hilda b.1863 Sweden

Any information you may be able to help with in regards to the parish Lars was from, his parents names, and when he immigrated would be greatly appreciated.

My email address is je.lodestar@comcast.net.

I have hit a brick wall in helping my wife trace her Swedish Ancestry from the USA to Sweden.  Here is the info we have, most of it passed down thru family heritage:

Name:  John P (Peter??) Sandquist (changed name on arrival to US from Pearson, Pehrson, or Persson)

Born:  Between 1842-1844

Birth Location:  In Sweden but specific location not known, , probably in the Gotland province of Sweden

Parents:   Andreas Persson, Pearson or Pherson (1818-1886)    ajsa [unkown maiden name]

Emigration:  From Sweden about 1869 and settled in Fairfax, MN.   Don't know the port of departure, but possibly Gothenburg.

Spouse Name:  Maji (or Maria??) (born about 1840)

His firstborn was a son named Claus Anton Sandquist (previously Pearson, Pehrson or Persson) who family history says was born in Egvena, Sweden on Feb 1, 1869.  He was only a few months old when the family emigrated to USA in late 1869.

Any information or referrals would be appreciated.  We are traveling to Sweden next week and visiting Egvena, Swedne area north-east of Gothenburg, so would love to hear any info from anyone before then so we might possibly check it out while in Sweden.

 Regards, John Ellis

7/18/2008
Jerry,
I am hoping you or someone can break down my huge brick wall.  My
name is Judith Sewell and I have been searching for information on my
great grandfather or any of his relatives for many years.  His name is
John O. Anderson and he was born somewhere in Sweden,  December 4, 1853.
He died July 8, 1929 in Minneapolis, Hennepin Co, Minnesota.  According
to his death certificate, it showed his father's name was Olaf Anderson
of Sweden.  His mother was also from Sweden, name unknown.  His death
certificate said he had been in the U.S. for 62 years prior to his death.
The closest I can come to any information on John Anderson is the 26
June 1895 Census from Stillwater, Washington County, Minnesota, and birth
records for my grandfather, Otto (Author) Leonard Anderson.  John O.
Anderson married Amalia (Amelia or Molly) Olsen and they had three or
four children. George Anderson born abt 1884 in Stillwater, Minnesota,
Otto Anderson born 1 May 1885 Stillwater, Minnesota, he married Josephine
Catherine Larscheid, and Letta M. Anderson born 8 November 1886 in
Stillwater, Minnesota, she married Felix Marsolais.

I believe John O. Anderson immigrated abt 1877.  I believe he got
married to Amelia in Minnesota abt 1884 or earlier.  I have finally found
Amalia's family from Norway this past month.  I do not know if John came
to the U.S with anyone or any relatives.  I only know that he was in
Stillwater, Minnesota in the 1885 census and all his children were born
in Stillwater (or it used to be call Bayport), Minnesota.  I found
another census from South Stillwater, MN, showing John O. Anderson age
40, Amalia Anderson age 34, George Anderson age 11, Leonard Anderson age
10, and Datter Anderson age 8.

In the 1910 U.S Federal Census,Minneapolis, Minnesota, John is 56,
Amelia is 48, George is 25, Leonard is 24.  Also living with them are:
Reinard Irvik age 22, Peter Irvik age 21, Olof Dulifsberg age 20, John
Bjorge age 23, Jonas Sorvig age 23.  In the 1920 U.S Federal Census,
Minneapolis, Minnesota, John O. Anderson is age 41 (has to be a
misprint),  Alalia is age 58, and living with them is Thomas Barges age
29 and Raymond Ervick age 30.

This is about all I know about John O.  Anderson and I know nothing
about George Anderson, either.  It is driving me crazy trying to find
anything.  Please help me find my relatives/cousins.  Thank you for your
wonderful site and maybe this will help someone else out, too.
Sincerely, Judith Sewell  email:  sewell88@juno.com

I've just recently made a huge dent in my Borin family Brick Wall!  But as soon as I got through part of the brick wall I hit another one.

My great grandfather, Edward Borin Bowers was born to Swedish parents, but soon after they arrived in New York City the youngest three children were sent west on the Orphan Trains by the Children's Aid Society of Brooklyn, NY.

Earlier this week I used the Emibas CD to find the Borin family's emigration.  I found the following information:

Borin, Jons b. 7/13/1840 in Borgsjo, Vasternorrlands Ian (Medelpad)
Bergvall, Katarina Lovisa b. 8/23/1842 in Pitea, Norrbottens Ian (Norrbotten)
Borin, Johan August b. 6/8/1864 in Sundsvall, Vasternorrland Ian (Medelpad)
Borin, Per b. 12/15/1865 in Borgsjo, Vasternorrland Ian (Medelpad)
Borin, Kristina Lovisa b. 4/15/1868 in Skon, Vasternorrlands Ian (Medelpad)
Borin, Anna Katarina b. 12/27/1869 in Skon, Vasternorrlands lan (Medelpad)
Borin, Anders b. 11/9/1871 in Skon, Vasternorrlands lan (Medelpad)
Borin, Edla Mathilda b. 9/25/1873 in Skon, Vasternorrlands lan (Medelpad)
Borin, Bror Otto Knut b. 3/27/1877 in Skon, Vasternorrlands lan (Medelpad)

They each had that they Emigrated 5/29/1881 from Kubikenborg, Skon, Vasternorrland lan (Medelpad) to New York, USA

The source was SVAR: Household Examination Roll, vol Skon AI:8B, p. 190; Migration Roll, vol. Skon B:4

Emibas migration file ID: Skon Y 1881 023

I then looked at Ancestry.com for their passenger list, where I found:

Katerina L. Borin with 6 children, her husband Jons nor her son Johan August were with them.

They departed from Bremen, Germany and arrived in NY on 28 Jun 1881 on the ship Habsburg.

Since Jons wasn't with the family I thought that he might have come over earlier, so I checked for any Borins coming to NY earlier than 1881, and I found in the Emigranten Popular, 1783-1951 database at Ancestry.com: J. Borin b. ca 1840 from Skon, Vasternorrland lan, departed from Goteborg and  his destination was NY.  The Record Date was 11 Jul 1879.

My question is: why did the church record (from Emibas) says that Jons Borin emigrated on 5/29/1881 with the rest of his family, but he wasn't on the ship with his family, and it looks like he came a couple of years earlier in 1879.

If anyone has access to the Household Examination Roll and the Migration Roll, could you please check to see if Jons really left in 1879 or 1881.

I'd really appreciate any help you could give me and if you have any suggestions for how to solve this mystery I'd love to hear it!

My Grandfather Merlin Rudolph Anderson was placed with a foster family on September 18, 1922 (born on Sept 1, 1922).  He was believed to have been born Charles Anderson.  His birth father was Leonard Anderson born in Westergotland, Sweden Sept 28, 1893. His birth mother was Hilda (Forsberg or Fosberg) Anderson born in Skelleftea, Sweden Feb 21, 1897.  They were both believed to have come to us in 1916 but didn't meet until a later time in Illinois.  They were married on January 9, 1918 and had a daughter (Leonora Anderson) in 1919.  Around this time, April 1919, they moved to Battle Creek, MI.  She was a nurse at the Battle Creek Sanitarium and also a waitress at the Post Tavern in Battle Creek.
They have been located on the 1920 census record and also the 1921 Battle Creek City Directory.  In 1921, they started to have trouble in the home and a property settlement was drawn up.  She would have been pregnant at the time for my Grandfather.  They were split when he was born.  Shortly after he was born, she left battle creek and went back to Chicago.  She wrote back to a friend in Battle Creek requesting that her baby be put up for adoption.  He was put into two foster homes before he was placed with his adoptive parents on July 24, 1923 in Wexford County Michigan.  I have no information past the separation of Hilda and Leonard or even Leonora in 1922.  I have not been able to find any of them on census records, death certificates, etc... My Grandfather will be 86 years old this year and I would like to give him as much information as I can about his relatives.  He was adopted by wonderful people, Arthur and Sara Anderson, but our family would like information on his birth family.  If anyone can help point me in the right direction, or has any information on these people, your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hello!

Am wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction with my Småland
ancestors.  There was essentially nothing to start with, and I believe I
have at least made some headway: my maternal grandfather's parents were John
A. Wassberg, born in October of 1849 (date unknown, parents unknown, parish
unknown), d. 1908 in Balsam Lake, Polk Co. Wisconsin, married to Anna
Charlotte Johansdotter (Ek), born 26 April 1856 in Flisby, Berg, died 1898
in Balsam Lake, Polk Co. Wisconsin.  Anna's parents were Johan Magnus
Johansson, b. 30 Dec. 1819 in Eksjo, married ca. 1843 to Lena Karin
Jonsdotter, b. 29 August 1824 in Solberga.  Johan Magnus Johansson's parents
were Johannes Månsson, b. 24 July 1792 in Eksjo, married Catarina Jonsdotter
(b. 3 May 1795).  Johannes parents were Måns Månsson and Stina Jonsdotter.
The only match I have found for Catarina seems to be one born in Bredestad
to Jonas Gustavsson and Christina Persdotter.  That does't seem to fit, but
may be possible.  At any rate, I am looking for leads re: Catarina
Jonsdotter, Lena Karin Jonsdotter, Måns Månsson and Stina Jonsdotter, and
anything on John A. Wassberg.  The only lead I have is that he came to the
U.S. in N.Y. from Liverpool on September 10, 1880 on "The City of Brussels".

Any leads or assistance is greatly appreciated!  Thank you!      Steve       Cstevewald@netzero.com

Hi Jerry!

I seek any available information on the parents, siblings, or birth parish of Nils Jonasson Diurberg.  (Diurberg was his soldier name) What I have found, which I hope is accurate:

Nils was: born 1691; educated at Strängnäs; accepted as a soldier 12/17/1709; in Oppunda Company, Södermanlands regiment; and from Floda parish, Södermanlands, when he enlisted. His rote was then 301, and he lived in Skenäs torp, Västra Granhed. The rote farms were: Granhed, Girtorp (or Hirtorp), and Österby. The Possessor of all 3 is listed as Agn. Ribbing. Nils was wounded at Helsingborg; thereby found incapable as a soldier; and reassigned 7/29/1710. His torp number changed to 1201. He was captured at Tönning; and discharged from the Swedish army 1715. He died 4/15/1742, Kvols, Denmark. One soldier record says he was born in  Södermanlands, but does not give a parish/municipality. He married first, Karen Christensdatter, and later, Kirstine Knudsdatter, in Denmark. I know that births are often not recorded in early registers, that baptismal records often don't contain birth data, and that it is nearly impossible to find baptismal records without the birth parish - but I was hoping that perhaps someone with access to Household Examination rolls, or other records might have some additional clue to Nils parentage or early years. My thanks for any help anyone can give me.

I am looking for the family of Nils Gustav Persson; born 21 July 1828 in Rinna Parish, Ostergotland.  Died 29 July 1885 in Rinna Parish.  First wife was Kristina Eriksdotter; second wife was Eva Johanna Eriksdotter.  Children were Johannes Augustus, bd 1871; Nils Viktor, bd Feb 1874; Anna Lovisa, 20 September 1866.  Nils and Johannes immigrated to the U.S.  and changed their names to Palmgren.

The children were raised by Sven August Petersson, bd May 14 1835 and Gustafva Vallander, bd July 8, 1839 from Odeshog.  They had a son, Carl August Teodor, born March 38, 1877 in Rinna parish.

Cannot find out why they changed their name to Palmgren.  What happened to Carl? and Anna?  Who was Clara Palmgren?  She was born in Jun 1855 and came to U.S. and married John Ahlgren.

Any information on these people would be appreciated.

Jerry,

You may remove my “Brick Wall” regarding Charles A Sundblad. (posted 10/29/2007)

Lots of information was located and sent to me and I am thrilled with the results.

Thank you!!    Charlene Sundblad

10/29/2007

Could someone assist with parental information on Charles A. Sundblad?

Charles was born in Granna, Sweden in 1849/1850. He immigrated in 1868.

Married Julia Swanson in 1874.

Charles had a younger brother:

Alfred Anders Sundblad born in Granna, Sweden in 1858. He and his entire family (wife; Josefina (Karlson) and children)

immigrated in 1907. They settled in Iowa.

Question: who were the parents of Charles and Alfred?

Question: did they have other siblings?

Question: What was the name of the Ship that Charles traveled on? Port of arrival?

Question: Where did Charles live in America the six years BEFORE he married Julia Swanson?

Question: Did any other members of this Sundblad family immigrate to America?

Thank you!     Charlene Sundblad    Email address: deforce@clearwire.net

Dear Jerry and friends,

I just want to thank the three people who responded so quickly to my request for help in my Brick Wall to find my grandfather and his family.  I am now 97% certain that the information I received from my new found friends, is indeed my grandfather from Sweden along with his parents, grandparent and siblings!  I just need to make the final connection of this Konrad in Sweden with my Conrad in Boston/New York to be 100% certain!

I had no idea on where or how to find my grandfather's family.  I just want to let you and the others who have helped me, to know that I am so very grateful for all their help!!!!!  Finding my family has been a great, long-waited blessing!!!!  If I have another Brick Wall in my Swedish research, I know that I can come to all of you for help!

Thanks again!!!!!     kahasley

Hi Jerry!

I'm at a brick wall in searching for my grandfather, Conrad Severin Anderson.  He was born on 5 Oct 1890 in Stockholm Sweden or in the surrounding area of Stockholm.  I don't know what his parents or siblings names are.  I only know that he was in the Swedish Navy around 1915 or 1916 and I was told that he jumped ship in Boston, MA, USA around 1916 or 1917.  I did find a record for him in the Boston area in 1917, but I do not know where or how to trace him back to Stockholm, Sweden.  I was hoping for a military record of my grandfather from the Swedish Navy or possibly a census or birth record.

He died in Bronx, New York in 27 Jan 1960.

I received a message about a Konrad Severin Andersson, born 1890, but I can't find a way to verify if this is my grandfather, Conrad.  This is what I received:

Anders August Andersson, married man, father
Wood worker
b. 1856 in Hällestad, Östergötlands lan, Östergotland, Sweden.

Hilda Karolina Kristina Andersdotter, married woman, mother
b. 1864 in Hällestad, Östergötlands lan, Östergotland, Sweden.

The children:
Elsa Helena, born 1886 in Hällestad, Östergötlands lan, Östergotland, Sweden.
Valborg Kristina, born 1888 in Hällestad, Östergötlands lan, Östergotland, Sweden.
Konrad Severin, born 1890 in Hällestad, Östergötlands lan, Östergotland, Sweden.

The family are residing (in 1900) at Krukan, Norrköpings norra, Östergötlands lan, Östergotland.
-----------------------------
Hällestad is about 2 hours from Stockholm by car.

Any help would be grealy appreciated!  I've been searching for his family for almost 30 years!     Thanks,   Kathy     kahasley@yahoo.com

Hi Jerry,

I’m having a hard time tracing my Swedish line.  My Great Grand father, Gustaf Nelson (born 2 Nov 1866 Stockholm Sweden) arrived Australia sometime prior to 1896. One rumor is that that he was a mariner on a vessel in which his father “Per Nelson” (born about 1840, Sweden) was the captain of and he did not return to that vessel from shore leave when it left an Australian port. Other rumors are that he came to Australia via USA and spent some time there. I believe her had a brother who may have migrated to America whose name was either Carl or Charles Nelson.  His Mothers name was Catherine Anderson (or possibly Andersson).

The Nelson name may have been Nilsson prior to immigration.

Gustaf Married Mary McLean 10 Feb 1896 at Geelong, Victoria Australia.

Children of this marriage:

Mary Catherine Nelson b. 14 Jan 1897, Victoria Australia

David Gustaf Nelson  b. 25 Jul 1898, Western Australia

Harold James Nelson b. 30 Jan 1900, Western Australia

Edward Henry Nelson b. 17 Nov 1901, Western Australia

Ellen Nelson b. 24 Oct 1911, Western Australia

Any help would be appreciated.             Regards,    Marty Nelson     martyjamesnelson@gmail.com

My father, Gustaf Pihl (spelled Pil on his birth certificate) was born in Stockholm July 9, 1902 to Viktor Johansson Pil (born 8-17-1873) and Gerda Sophia, f, Augustinsson Pil (born 5-15-1878)  I guess he was born in Stockholm.  He had two sisters: Gunhild Hornaas and Greta Ericson.  If I am not mistaken Greta had a son named Stig.  My father came over to America on the Oscar II February 24, 1924.  I would just like to get into contact with some of my relatives if at all possible as I am sure they are out there some where.  My father passed away in September of 1993.  I just do not understand why my relatives are not curious about finding me and my brother.  It just seems strange to me.  I would love to meet them.......or even let them know  that we are still here in Montana.  Oh yes I live in Choteau Mt.  I am under the impression that the reason why my  father  got to come over to America is that he had an Aunt who lived East of Dutton Montana in the Diamond Valley.............I hope this helps......I am about to give up......some of the Swedish sites are nice but I do not  read Swede.........Thank You.......Diane L Bishop Box 614 Choteau Mt. 59422 USA    My  email address is    bishop@3rivers.net

I am so glad to have found you!

I am looking for relatives in Sweden so I may contact them prior to a visit there in future. My grandfather (George Johnson) corresponded with these people in Swedish - which I cannot do (sadly). Any help in locating any of these people would be gratefully received. I should note that my dear grandfather was the world's worst speller, so please forgive any mis-spelled words!

In the Spring of 1887 the Martin Family of Goteborg, emmigrated to the USA and settled in Philadelphia.  We think that it is unusual that 10 people traveled together and settled in the USA at one time.  The father was Carl Eric Roland Martin and his wife was Johanna Elizabeth Janson Martin.  The father's mother, Clementina Forsbac Martin came with them.  They also brought their 7 children, Robert, Anna Virginia, Hilma, Gustaf Roland, Blenda, Olga, and Astrid.  Carl E R Martin was an engineer and we believe that Johanna was the illegimate daughter of the famous John Ericsson and Anna Britta Lof.  We were never able to prove this, but it was passed down through the family for years.   Please let me know if anyone knew of this family.

Hello Jerry,

I would be interested in making contact with any relatives of Captain
Nicholas Samuel HEDSTROM born in Sweden on 3 September 1821.
He arrived and settled in Fiji in 1869 and died at Levuka Fiji on 14th
February 1900. He was a master mariner and on arrival in
Fiji set up a cotton plantation.

I believe many years ago someone in the family made contact with an Anna
HEDSTROM in Sweden who was related. However
I do not have a contact address.

I was married to Morris Gordon HEDSTROM son of Morris Keith Hedstrom son
of  John Maynard HEDSTROM son of the above
Nicholas. For my two sons sake I would like to assemble as much information
as I can about the family in Sweden.

Thankyou for your assistance.

Hello Jerry,
I am searching for info on my great grandfather.  He is Herman Fredlund (Fridlund)? born 12 Sep 1866,
Karlstad, Varmland, Sweden.  He emigrated in 1887, I believe on the City of Montreal.  He was married to Anna Amelia Sundblad, born 13 Jan 1865 and emigrated in 1867. Her parents were Carl August Sundblad and Maria K. Johonson.  I'm trying to complete a family tree for my father's 75th birthday in January.  I have no idea where Herman lived or his parent's names or if he had any siblings, and if so, if they emigrated to the United States.  Any info you can provide me would be greatly appreciated.  I have Anna's family back 4 generations but with Herman I've run into, well, a BRICK WALL!
My e-mail is          rhbfh53916@powerweb.net          Thank you  Gayle

P.S. Do you only research Swedish ancestry? If so can direct me to a person I can query regarding my Danish great grandfather?

I have been trying to find information on my grandfather.  He went by Eric Wicklund, but my sister recently said that he had changed his name.  He was born 19 September 1873 in Vastnorrlands, Sweden.  From the census, he said he came to the US through New York on May 5, 1893.  I have found Johann Wik departed from Bremen on the Stuttgart and arrived at Ellis Island May 2, 1893.  I believe that this was my grandfather.

My mother said his father's name was Johan Widd and was born in 1850 in Vasternorrlands, Sweden and married Beata Simons born in 1850 in Sweden.  She said his father died when he was about 2 1/2 years old and was taken by an uncle to Finland and was raised on a pig farm in Virtel near Vaasa, Finland
Two of my aunts visited a Helge Wiklen, I think around Jakostad in 1972.
On my grandfather's marriage in Florence Co., WI, 20 Feb. 1900, to Erika Helena Hellman Johnson he listed his parents as John Nelson and Bertha Swins.
He had a sister, Lisa Gerdes, who was born about 1870 and married Johan Lindberg.  They had a daughter, Gun-Brit Lindberg, who was unmarried and living on the island of Alno in 1992.  I spoke with her on the phone and got some information from her.
I think he had sisters Hulda, Serna Lina, and Marie and a brother John too.

My e-mail address is dmoilanen@tampabay.rr.com    Thank you.  Diana Moilanen

Dear Jerry,

I've visited your homesite and it's a wonderful job you've made!
Unfortunately I couldn't find my own ancestors there.

In Census 1870 they lived in Benson, Chippewa county (now Swift County).
What happened to them later is ?.
If you want to have them too in your register, please do.
 They were
Lars Larsson (borb 28/11 1803 Hol) and his wife Johanna Andersdotter Ekstrom (born 5/5 1803 i Edsvalla, Nor/S )  emigrated in 1863 with their daughter Lotta (born 27/8 1841 i Siene). Lars was a crofter in Fullestad, Ödegärdet.

I've found them in Census 1870 in Benson, Chippewa County, Minnesota, but they are not there in Census 1880.

I believe Lars and Johanna died in the 1870's and Lotta married and had another surname.

Lars and Johanna had a son – Sven (born 1837 i Hol) – who emigrated in 1862 and I believe they went to him, but I can't find any Sven/Swan Larsson/Larson born this year!

Hi Jerry,

Thank you for your help site. I have been searching for ages trying to find the ship my ancestors. Johannes and Elna Post,  came to the USA on. I finally found out that the name on the records is Pust. This is their records for emigrating that I found.

Name: Pust, Johannes Occupation: Arbejder Age: 51 Destination: St. Francisco Contract no.: 126800 Registration date: 6/10/1875 Last res. parish: ? Last res. county: - Sverige Last residence: Sverig Destination country: USA Destination city: San Francisco Destination state: Californien Name of ship: Indirekte IDcode: I7477P1313

Name: Pust, Elna Occupation: Hustru Age: 50 Destination: St. Francisco Contract no.: 126800 Registration date: 6/10/1875 Last res. parish: ? Last res. county: - Sverige Last residence: Sverig Destination country: USA Destination city: San Francisco Destination state: Californien Name of ship: Indirekte IDcode: I7477P1314

My question is, how do I find out the name of the ship since they came "indirekte", not through Denmark. I think they must have sailed from Sweden. They came to live with their daughter Anna who was living in Oregon, USA. Anna came over in 1860 or 61. I don't know if she was married to Gottfried Wohlert (not sure of spelling as he later changed it to Wallace) when she came over or if she married him soon after. I also think that Elna was her step-mother. A document from the LDS church has her mother listed as Bente Nielsen.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!    Lois Taylor   ltaylor@orednet.org

jla7@clear.net.nz        Greetings to all who read this:

I am looking to find my great grand father.  His name was JOHAN ANDERSON

He arrived in New Zealand in 1872.  He could have come on the  PALMERSTON which left from Hamburg on 12.12.1872 and arrived in Port Chalmers Dunedin on 12.12. 1872.  There is an assisted passenger, Anderson, Anders aged 27 Labourer.  I don't know whether it's him or not.  At his death, his son said his name was JOHAN ALFRED ANDERSON.  The name thing is confusing.

I do know he arrived in 1872 because on his Naturalization Papers that is the date recorded.

I have found his date of birth in SVENSKARNA I  NYA ZEELAND and this is the information I have about his Swedish life:

Born: 1848 - Parish: Sth - County: S - Arrived: 1872 - Naturalized: 24 October 1890

Deceased: 8 August 1893  Married with 10 children

Marriage date:  6 January 1876  Wife's name:  Margaret Harkness

Does anyone reading this know anything about this ancestor of mine? Does anyone have a relative who immigrated to NZ in 1872?  I'd appreciate any help.
Thank you.  Yours sincerely  Janice Anderson

Hi Jerry

I am looking for my dad's two uncles Hans Christian Johnson and August Johnson. I don't have too much on them. I will give you what I have. Hans Christian Johansen was born on March 1, 1860 at Lier in Trogstad, Norway and was baptized on April 1, 1860. ( Now this came directly from a genealogist in Norway but I found in the Norway census him listed as being born in 1861 so be aware of that.

August Johansen was born on Aughst 29, 1865 on Nygard in Trogstad and baptized on October 8, 1865.

Their parents are: Carl Johan Nilsen Korperud born May 25, 1828 and Helene Olsdatter who were married on March 2, 1854.

Not much to go on but it's all that I have.

I was told that they settled in Minnesota. That's where I have been looking. Recently I found out that there was relatives in the Fergus Falls area so I've been looking there. Just a hint.

Good Luck    Ruth Ann Johnson Sommer      ruann57@centurytel.net

I'm seeking living descendants of  and/or information about my maternal grandfather:
JOHAN WILHELM LILJA - b.1887 in Göteburg (Masthugget parish), Sweden
d.1943 in Jamaica, (Queens County) New York, US

In 1890 he was living in the following household in Göteburg:

Father, CHARLES ROBERT LILJA -- b.1859 in Göteburg (Karl Johan parish)
Wife, AUGUSTA ANDERSDOTTER - b.1852 in Bohuslän (Stala parish)

Siblings:
Brother, CHARLES ROBERT - b.1882 in Göteburg (Karl Johan parish)
Brother, FRITZ OSKAR ----- b.1885 in Göteburg (Masthugget parish)
---- JOHAN WILHELM, b. 1887 ----
Sister, SELMA ELISABET ---- b.1889 in Göteburg (Karl Johan parish)
Foster Sister, JENNY MARIA ANDERSSON, b. 1875 in Bohuslän (Stala parish)

John Wilhelm emigrated to US, 7 Oct 1919 (age 32), on the Stavangerfjord which debarked from Christiania (Oslo), Norway.  According to the ship manifest, he had been to the US in 1914 with Erie, PA (Pennsylvania) as his destination.  The 1919 mainfest also lists the person he is "going to join" as ERIK LINDER at 350 50th St., Brooklyn, N.Y.  He changed his name to JOHN WILLIAM LILLY when he became a US citizen in 1926; at this time residing at 414 York Street, Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey, US.  He married HEDVIG JOSEFA AAS (b. 25 Aug 1891 in Versterålen, Norway), who emigrated from the same port in 1920.  They had 3 daughters (b. 1922, 1924 and 1927) and sometime around the birth of the third daughter, they moved to 145-38 Linden Blvd, Jamaica, , L.I. (Long Island), N.Y.  The only relative with whom they had contact in the US was his cousin (their mothers were sisters):

HILDA ANDERSON,  b.1875 in Sweden, d.1963 in Port Allegany, PA.  She worked in England before emigrating to the US where she worked for prominent families in New York as head of their kitchen staffs.  She lived with the Lilly (Lilja) family during her vacations and breaks. Hilda has a sister, CLARA, who married a HERMANSON and lived in Erie, PA.  When in her eighties, Hilda moved in with Clara's son HAROLD S. HERMANSON and his wife Louise. They lived in Port Allegany, PA.  Hilda had another sister, ANNA, who was living in England in 1963.  I believe this has a connection to the 1890 "Foster Sister" listed above; in fact I wonder if Jenny Maria (b.1875) might even be Hilda.

If you can help, please contact me (G.M. Churley): gmchurley@myway.com

Anja was born in Helsinki,Finland on 09 Apr 1887, and Tellervo was born in Turku, Finland on 24 Nov 1913. They left Finland on 04 Apr 1914 went by train up to Torneo Sweden then down to Malmo Sweden then to Oslo, Norway, and boarded the ship bound for America. I always was told that they didn't go through Ellis Island because Anja's husband, Nick Heikklia or Wirenius of Wirenjus had  previously become a naturalized citizen. I was also told that they entered through Boston, But Oscar II only entered through New York by everything I have been able to find. Through the NORWAY-Heritage site.

I am also searching for Henry Koponen, and Sofia Piisponen who were born in Finland but I do not know their dates of birth or area of Finland where they were born. They are the parents of Anja mentioned above. They did not come to America. Anja was my maternal grandmother and Tellervo, her daughter, was my mother. Anja distroyed all letters etc from Finland during her old age and I have nothing else to go by.

If anyone can help me by telling me where and/or how to research this, I will be eternally greatful.

Heather in Australia       Hma96678@bigpond.net.au

EDWARD (James) MATSON born 18 December 1853 in Stockholm Sweden according to his naturalisation papers in 1909 in Australia. The only trouble is that I know he was a sailor and I found him in an 1881 Census in the UK and he gives his birthplace as Finland.

On his marriage certificate he gives his father as Edward Mathias – a carpenter and his mother as Margaret Ann. I think he arrived in Australia in 1883/84. Where did he come from?

Has anyone come across this name in their searching?               I am always hopeful.

Searching for the parish of birth for my grandfather, Carl August Petersson, born in Sweden on December 13, 1863.  He emigrated to the U.S. in the early 1890's, was naturalized in Northern California in 1896, married in 1904, had three sons and died in 1927 in California.  He was an accomplished carpenter, building barns, homes and businesses in Northern Humboldt County.

We have not found an emigration record for him from Goteborg, Malmo or Stockholm.  The CD that lists Swedish sailors who left their ship in foreign countries has been checked and nothing that seems to fit.

Any help or suggestions of courses to follow would be gratefully received and appreciated.

Thank you, for your web site.              Sharley Peterson    Sharleymb@yahoo.com

I am looking for information on my gg grandfather, Wilhelm Eloff Carlson.  He was born February 6, 1857 and died in East Providence, RI on February 18, 1910.  His death certificate, marriage certificate and census records indicate that he was born in Sweden to Carl and unknown mother.  The first record I can find for him is his marriage to Mary Cunningham Stevens in Aug,1877.  After that he is in census records etc.. in East Providence, RI.  In census records I found a John A. Carlson listed as brother, and Anna Borgeson living with his family.  Any help would be appreciated.

I'm looking for the name of the daughter of Gustav Gustafsson of Vasa, who was the crown prince of Sweden before his father Gustav IV Adolf was abdicated.  Family "legend" says the daughter was found hidden in a royal carriage by a German or Swedish family.  Everyone else in the carriage had been killed.  This family "adopted" her and hid her for many years, moving regularly around Sweden and Germany.  The family story says she moved to the US and married Henry Swigelson, a Prussian.  They had 8 children before he was killed in a train accident in 1887.  Any info as to whether this story is true would be appreciated. Thanks.  Maria at MKE65@juno.com

On 10/28/2005 I posted a request for information regarding my gggrandmother, Elin Jonsdotter Pettersson Hellstrom. These names could be spelled differently, as "Hallstrom" or one "l" for either spelling. Elin had 3 children, Johan, Johanna and Matilida as well as Emma , Alfred and Fredricka. I have information and the latter three children. I have a new email address: carolerutha@yahoo.com. Thanks to anyone for help in breaking this brick wall. C. A.

Hi Jerry:  This is my brick wall:

Looking for my great great grandmother ELIN JONSDOTTER PETTERSSON HELLSTROM.

Elin was born in Sweden in 1824 or 1825.  She and ELIAS PETTERSSON were
married in Sweden and had 3 children:  JOHAN b. 1848; JOHANNA b 1851;
MATILDA b 1853.  They left Sweden for America in 1854.  Elias died in passage.

Once in Stillwater, Minnesota, Elin married CARL aka CHARLES
HELLSTROM-HELSTROM-HALLSTROM-HALSTROM, whose wife had died in passage.  Carl
had one son, JOHAN.  Carl and Elin settled in Chisago County, Minnesota.

ELIN and CARL had 3 children:  ALFRED b 1859; Emma b 1862; Fredrika b 1865.

Elin's children did not get along with Carl and his son Johan, so Elin left
Carl while he was out in the field. She also left their 3 chilren with Carl.  EMMA was my great grandmother.

Elin is found in the 1870 census in Chisago County, and then I can't find
her.  I know she went somewhere west of Minneapolis and wanted to start a
tree farm.  EMMA spent a year with Elin when she was about 15.  I suspect
EMMA met her first husband, CHARLES CALLANDER, there because he was a Swede
that reportedly came from Litchfield, Minnesota.  EMMA and CHARLES had 2
daughters, CHARLOTTE (Lottie) b 1883 or 1884 was my grandmother.

Lottie told us that she had visited her grandma Elin.  This must have been
before 1900 when Lottie was married.  Lottie told us that OLIVIA, MINNESOTA
was named after her grandmother (Elin).  There is no record of this in
Olivia, MN.  Of course Elin could have changed her name or gotten married again.

Any information about Elin (Olivia) or Johan or Johanna or Matilda would be
appreciated.  Thank you.   Carole Anderson

Hello..I am hoping to find info on my grandmothers first husband.  He was born about 1899 in Sweden.  His name was Louis Nelson, (but pictures have Lenus Nelson on back).  He lived in Washington State, Snohomish and/or Skagit County, (town of Arlington or Mount Vernon/Ehrlich area)  and was married to Zion (Helen) McInnis in 1919.  He was employed as a milkman, and his parents were Carl Nelson and Anna Lindstrom.  So the story goes, he died of tuberculosis after they were married only five years or so, but I can't find any records of his death, or life before grandma.  Any help would be so greatly appreciated!

It is known that August Johnson was in the US, Indiana in about 1880, he left his wife Anna Wilson Johnson in Stockholm, Sweden with several children.  His son, Peter came to the US with Anna's brother by the surname Wilson when he was about 16 years of age, or about 1880/81.  He worked in the coal mines in Indiana and Illinios. He came to work as indentured for a Mr. Cook, in Wisconsin, Neena, Wisconsin.  He then married a Dutch girl, Reinskie Dykstra.  He ran into his father,August in a coal mine in Indiana, not knowing he where he was in the U.S.  Some of Peter' s  children went back to Sweden in the 1950s and visited relatives in the Goteland, spelling off area as remembered.

Let me know if you need more dates .
I am anxious to find out about my gr. grandfather, August Johnson, what parish he was from. Thanks,  ljonson@citlink.net

Hi Jerry,

I have been searching for information about my great great grandparents.
They have been a very elusive bunch to track down.  Here is the information
I have found so far:

Fredric Wilhelm Hillegren
b.  20 July 1820 in Stockholm, Sweden

Maria Antoinetta
b.  9 October 1813 or 1815 (the writing on the Parish record I found was
very hard to read)

Fredric and Maria were married on 10 November 1844 in Hasjo Socken,
Jamtland, Sweden.  The information on the marriage record indicated that
they were both former children from an orphanage (barnhusbarn).  They had
three children that I know of:

Jonas Petter
b. 30 October 1846 in Hasjo Socken, Jamtland

Anna Maria
b. 22 September 1850 in Hasjo Socken

Lotta Regina
b. 25 May 1855
d. 13 February 1856

Fredric emigrated to the United States sometime before 1880 (I found him
listed in the 1880 United States Census living in Minnesota with his
daughter and her husband).  I have not been able to find ANY information
about his emigration.  I did find his daughter's emigration...Anna Maria
left Sweden on May 21, 1875.  This information states that she traveled
alone on her ticket, so I am assuming her father must have traveled a few
years before her.

I am searching for information about Fredric and Maria's parents, info on
the orphanage they came from (name, where it was located, etc...),
emigration info to the U.S., and possible death dates for them.  Any help
anyone could give me about this family would be greatly appreciated.  My
e-mail address is tkruisselbrink@hotmail.com.  Thank you!  Tammy

Hi!

My name is Lorene Tinjum Johansen and I am an American living in Sweden (married to a Norsk!). I have been searching, in vane, for anything on my
great-grandmother, Mary Anderson. The only information our family has is the following:

Marie Anderson (maiden name we believe to be MARIT NILSSON) Born: 5-27-1861
"Rorose", Sweden (I'm thinking possibly Røros, Norway since Sweden  controlled Norway at that time)
Immigrated: 1898 (according to 1910 and 1930 MN Census records for Becker Co.)

Resided in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota with her second husband, Ole M. Volden (Walden/Wolden) during the 1930 U.S. census. Information obtained from
Becker Co. indicates they filed for license and were married in Nov. 1905 in Detroit Lakes MARIT NILSSON

My parents have in their possession a  medal supposedly awarded to Mary/Marit for her sewing. On it is "Jämtlands Läns Kongl -
Hushållningssällskap". It is the only item from my great grandmother the family has.

She gave birth to  my grandmother (Anna Minnie Amanda) on Dec. 5th, 1898 in Lake Park,MN (Becker Co.), and church records
there recorded parents of my grandmother as Mary Anderson and Per Nilsen (possibly Norsk). Mary died on Aug. 25th, 1938, in Detroit Lakes. That's
about all we have to go on.

I have been unable to find Mary/Marit on the 1900 MN census, however, have found something of interest on the Cass Co, North Dakota 1900 Census...it
shows a Mary Anderson and a Minnie A. (servant and "boarder") with birth dates the correct months, but years off....also immigration for Mary shown
as 1897, but it sure could be them. My grandmother NEVER used Anna...always Minnie.

I'm more convinced now that my great grandmother was born in Røros, Norway since it is neighboring Jämtlands county in Sweden.

According to the census, Mary was a naturalized citizen...will that tell me any more information and WHERE do I obtain a copy of this?

Also, I've been told that folks from Jämtlands immigrated from Trondheim, Norway....if that is the case, I have found a Marit Nilson that immigrated
in 1897 for Moorhead, MN., which is very close of course to Detroit Lakes area.

I'm lost as to where to go next. Can you help?   Lorene Tinjum Johansen Dalskog, Sweden  lorene.johansen@telia.com

7/28/2005        update

Jerry -
I recently spent five productive days at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City and have learned a lot concerning my Swedish ancestry since I last posted here. A key missing was the definitive identification of a great grandmother who I now know to be Annie Satterberg. She was born in Gresmaiken (sp?) parish in Sweden in 1866. (Her husband to be Charles John Mellquist was born as Carl Johan Andersson in Essunga, Sweden, on September 21, 1863.)  Any information concerning her birth, youth, and/or emigration to Minneapolis, Minnesota, would be most appreciated.

Thanks!  Chuck     chuckmccallum@comcast.net

7/4/2005     update

Jerry-
Thanks to the help of MANY, I have a great deal of new information on the three-part brick wall posted on June 21, 2005.  The exception relative to brick wall (2) involves any details on the March 21, 1884, emigration  from Sweden of Carl Johan (Andersson) Mellqvist.  . However, my progress on brick walls (1): my paternal grandmother Florence Emily Melquist; and (3): the first wife of the Charles J. Mellquist of (2) AND the mother of the Florence of (1) has been nonexistent. Brick walls (1) and (3) seem based in Swedish communities in Minneapolis, MN, USA, rather than Sweden.  Any ideas?

Chuck McCallum  chuckmccallum@comcast.net

6/21/2005

Jerry -   Here is my brick wall.. Thanks for your help.   Chuck McCallum

My three-part brick wall concerns: (1) my paternal grandmother Florence Emily Mellquist (sometimes Melquist, or even Malquist); (2) her father Charles J. Mellquist; and (3) his first wife who was Florence‘s mother and my great grandmother.

(1)   Florence was born about Oct. 7, 1890, in Minneapolis, MN, though I can’t locate a birth certificate. I have her marriage certificate of June 8, 1909, in Regina, Saskatchewan, CANADA, to my grandfather William McPherson McCallum who had emigrated from Scotland. I also have birth certificates of two of her four children (including my father Charles J. McCallum born in Regina in 1918) and her death certificate in San Jose, CA, in 1922.

(2)   My great grandfather Charles J. Mellquist was most certainly born in Sweden on Sept. 21, 1863. According to an 1981 article on the Swedish Brothers of Minneapolis, published in the Swedish Genealogical Journal he may have been born in Essunga (parish?) of Skaraborg (administrative unit?). But additional text after his entry in the 1981 article suggests his Swedish name may have been Carl Johan Andersson, born in Dunkelmosse, Sweden, of father Anders Andersson, “crofter”, and mother Anna Pehrsdotter. This additional text is evidently due to research work from microfilm of the original parish birth records attributed to Maja and Carl-Erik Johansson of Salt Lake City. I don’t understand this additional text and, in particular, don’t see the relation of the name Andersson to Mellquist.  Moreover, the death certificate of Charles (issued in WA in 1945) lists his father as John Mellquist and his mother as Anna “Unknown”.

(3)   My great grandmother may have had the maiden name of Annie Satterburg based on the first marriage of Charles on Oct. 8, 1887, in Minneapolis.  However, family oral tradition refers to her first name as Amelia or Emilia, or…, giving rise to the middle name Emily for Florence. In any case, Florence’s mother died within 2-3 years of her birth and she was raised by her stepmother Nellie (Anderson) Mellquist – a cousin to the first wife? -  who married Charles on Dec 26, 1891. I can find no further information on the first wife of Charles.

Any help would be most appreciated!   Chuck McCallum   chuckmccallum@comcast.net

Hi Jerry,

I have been searching for the past several years on any information about my great-grandfather. The information I have is that my grandmother Hildur Thresa Larsdotter was born out of wedlock on April 24, 1885 in Sandarne, Helsingland Sweden to Anna Maria Larsdotter from Lysvik, Varmland, Sweden and Fredrik Larsson. I have been able to trace Anna Maria's family back many generations, however I cannot find anything on Fredrick Larsson. Any help at all to get me on the right track concerning Fredrick would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for information on the parents, birthdate and birthplace for Pohl Ohlstrom. He was born circa 1838. His marriage certificate states that his father's name was Anders Ohlstrom. Documentary evidence appears to indicate that his birth place was Sweden. He was a sailor who apparently 'jumped ship' in Australia in the 1850s. It is unclear exactly when he arrived, because even though he has a naturalisation record with a name of a ship of arrival listed ('Nilee'), he gives names of different ships later in life. He went on to marry Margaret Purtle in 1868 in Adelaide, South Australia. They had approximately 11 children in total, all born on the Yorke Peninsula in SA. The details of his children are all well recorded, and I am now trying to find information on his life prior to coming to Australia.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.     Kim Turner          kimtur@ace.net.au

OZ UK or New Zealand (I think OZ) Travelled the outback of OZ in the
goldfields, wanting info prior to 1915... his parents as far as we know were
Charles or Robert (Bob) Adams and Mary Scanlon/Scanlan... not sure where his
parents were born or when they entered OZ ... Could be that Joseph fathered
several children (the mother supposedly a "dark" woman)  in the outback...
also a son born to an unknown woman around  1920's in Sydney NSW. There were
also two daughters born to Charles & Mary ADAMS  (Mildred & Mona) who were
possibly "adopted" out... Any info whatsoever would be much apreciated as I
have been searching for this family for many years... Thank You... Lillian

Dear Readers of Brick Walls,

I am looking for answers to two questions concerning possible residents of the Hemmesjö area in the 19th century.

First, my great-aunt, Gustava Pettersdotter, married John Tengren sometime in the 1870s.  They emigrated to the United States probably in that same decade and settle in Menomonie, Wisconsin.  They had three children.  The oldest Charles (Carl?) Tengren was born in Sweden.  Do any of you have connections with this family?

Secondly, my grandfather, Johan Fritjof Danielsson, was born to Daniel Jonasson and his wife Christina Pettersdotter on 30 June 1862.  His birthplace was Billa Södergård, Cottage Hagalund.  Christina is the sister of Gustava Pettersdotter.  I cannot determine where the family line goes beyond that.

I have a little book given me by my second-cousin, Bertil Sjösteen of Åryd.  He told me at the time that this was related to our family there.  We are both descendants of Daniel Jonasson and Christina Pettersdotter.

 Any help?
Thank you for reading this.    Roger Danielson

Hi Jerry, I have been working on my Swedish family tree for three years now and I am at a huge brick wall. My GG grand parents came to America with thier children. My GG grand father was Bernt Rasmusson/Rasmussan/Rasmussen. He married Olaina/Oleanna M. Dahlborg in Sweden. Their children were Olof A. (My G grand father), Carl/Karl G. and Karolina/Carolina. Carolina was 1 or 2 when they came here and she died not long after they arrived. Olof married Anna Charlotta Johansson/Johansdotter/Johnsson. I'm not sure of her last name yet.

I am looking for info. on Anna Charlotta and Bernt's side of the family.

1. Bernt was born around 5-22-1828 in Rora, he emigrated in 1878 and settled in Massachusetts.
2.Olaina Mathilda Dahlborg was born around 10-7-1839 in Munkeby.

 Their children

1. Olof Amandus born 2-25-1872 in Stala
2. Carl/Karl Gustaf born 3-24-1870 in Stala
3. Carelina/Karolina born 7-20-1877 in Stala

Anna Charlotta was the daughter of who I think is Johan August Andersson and Johanna Johansdotter.

This is all I know about this family. I would really love to find out about Bernt's family and more about Oliana and Anna's family. Please help.
Thanks,     Janene

Hi Jerry,
I hope someone on your site can help me with this. I have been trying to
find information on Eric Nordling, born 1741 in Grytnas,Kopperberg. I have
searched clerical and birth records and could not find anything on his
parents.
He married Maria Matsdotter, born 1753 in Skultuna,Vastmanland,on July
10,1780. His son,Anders Ersson was born Jan.11,1788 in Haraker,Vastmanland
I thought he was listed as torparen but someone suggested that he might
have been a soldier. I don't know where else to look and I need some help.

Jerry,

(Please update)  4/5/2005
I wondered if there was a census after 1900 in Sweden that would list the
household of Maria Nilsdotter Rud in Gothenburg. I have discovered Stina
Maja Nilsdotter Rud, born June 5, 1852 in Borqvik Varmland to Nils Magnusson
Rud and Anna Lisa Andreasdotter is my Great Grandmother. She was unmarried
and lived with a sister Augusta in the 1890 census. In letters from the
early 1930's she mentions a Hedberg who lived in the room with Maria left. I
wonder if this roomer had something to do with her pregnancy. Can someone
look in an earlier census to figure out whom Hedberg is? If you recall, the
priest listed my Grandmother as a "foundling".

Thank You
Ellen skramstad

----
Some very nice individuals have helped me trace my Grandmother, Hildur Maria
Eriksson, to Goteborg Sweden.  In the 1890 Census, Hildur was living with
Olle Samuel Eriksson, born 1851 in Forshalla parish, Goteborg och Bohus
county, and Laura Josefina Jonson, born 1853 in Partille parish, Goteborg
och Bohus county. The census lists my Grandmother was born 1886 in Haga
parish, Goteborg och Bohus county as a foster daughter. A gentleman in
Sweden emailed that the records show Hildur was a foundling.

My curiosity concerns a sister referred to as blackmailing Hildur in
correspondence between my Grandparents before their marriage. I thought
Hildur matched as a daughter of Axel Edvard Vilhelm Erikson and Maria
Matilda Peterson living Stockholm in the 1890 census because they had two
daughters, Hildur Maria, same birthdate as my Grandmother, and a sister,
Nanny Cecilia, who matched because my Aunt told me my Grandmother's sister's
name was Nanny when I asked who was in a photo that sat on my Grandmother's
dressing table. My aunt told me the sisters were born in Uppsala. There is
also correspondence with an Aunt that refers to visiting Gränshyttan which
is listed as the birthplace of Axel Eriksson on a marriage record.

My brick wall now is if my Grandmother is a foundling, who is her sister?
Why is a connection to Gränshyttan mentioned in correspondence with my
Grandmother's Aunt Maria Ruud? One letter states Maria traveled for a visit,
"but there was no longer anything there in Gränshyttan". Axel could not be
my Grandmother's parent if the census lists two Hildurs in 1890 living in
different areas. The more information I receive, the more confusing the past
of my Grandmother is.

Thank You,  Ellen Skramstad

E-mail will be back soon....

NIELSEN/MADSEN

Looking for information re my grandfather's ancestors.  My grandfather, Niels Martin Nielsen, was born at Nykobing, Holbaek, Sjaeland on 16 April 1876 and baptised on 28 May 1876.  His parents were Chres(i)sten Nielsen and Eline Martine Madsen.  He had 2 sisters and one brother (that I know of) - Anna Christine Nielsen (married lauritis Peter olsen), Ella Dorothea Nielsen and Lauritis Theodore Nielsen.

Present at Niels Martin's baptism were Trine Madsdatter, Soren Larsen, Christen Nielsen and Mads Sorensen.  From this could I assume that Christen Nielsen and Mads Sorensen were the two grandfathers?  Who were the others?

I thought that Eline Martine Madsen was born on 5 June 1837 at Gundmandrup, Holbaek - parents mads Peter Sorensen and Ellen Madsen but I cannot prove this.  I cannot find anything on either Chresten Nielsen or Eline Madsen.  It is believed that both Chresten and Eline died sometime between 1900 and 1910.

My grandfather came to Australia on the "SS Ophir" in 1900 - working his way here as a crew member.

I have a small amount of information on Anna's family (Olsens) - descendants only with some of the family living on Bornholm.  Any other information would be gratefully appreciated.   Desley Garrahy  New South Wales, Australia.  garrbd@telpacific.com.au

JENSEN/LARSEN

Looking for ancestors of Chresten Peder Jensen and Anna Chatrine Larsen.  Chresten and Anna were married November 1871 at Veterloo, Praesto or Soro - both places were given.  Unsure who Chresten's parents were but have this father's names shown on his death certificate at Karl.  No mother's name given - not known.  Anna's parents shown on her death certificate were Bertha (surname unknown) and Karle Larsen.  I could not say for sure if these were their parents' names as information was really not known by next of kin who gave this informaiton at the time of their deaths.

They had 4 children born in Denmark before they migrated to Australia in September 1883 sailing on the "Roma".  Birthe Maria Jensen was born on 16 October 1872, baptised on 22 November 1872 at Hom, Soro, Niels Carl born 14 May 1875 baptised 8 August 1875 at Vrangstrup, Praesto, Jens Christian born 5 April 1879 baptised 15 June 1879 at Vrangstrup, Praesto, Hans Frederick born about 1882.  Ther 5th and last child, Anna Hansine (my grandmother) was born in Queensland on 16 December 1885.

The family here in Australia believe that Anna's brother/s were in Queensland prior to that time and that they sponsored Chresten, Anna and family to come to Queensland.  There was a fairly large "settlement" of Danish migrants on the Darling Downs, Queensland at that time.  I have made a contact with a member of a Larsen family in Queensland whose family came from the same area as my f amily - she doesn't think there is a connection but I still do, especially when she told me the same story that my grandmother used to tell and that is there is some connection to the Danish Royal family.  What this connection is we do not know but think that one of our ancestors was possibly employed by the Royal family.  We do not know where to find out this information.

I would appreciate any assistance to help me trace my Dansih roots.  Desley Garrahy  New South Wales, Australia.  garrbd@telpacific.com.au

Hi Jerry,
I sure up someone can help me with this because I am nearly at my
wit's end. Maria Sophia Forsberg was born Oct.21,1832 in
Sparsta,Fellingsbro,Orebro. The birth records show her parents to be Nils
Fredrik Forsberg and Maja Cajsa Forsberg. The Clerical survey Has Maja's
name as Lundqvist Forsberg.I do know she was born in 1801 but now I am
beginning to wonder if her birthplace was Fellingsbro because,so far, I
have not been able to find any information about her. I really would like
to find out who her parents were as well as her birthplace.      Nancy Jaderen     nvjaderen@yahoo.com

Hi, Jerry!
My name is Lorene Tinjum Johansen and I am an American living in Sweden
(married to a Norsk!). I have been searching, in vane, for anything on my
great-grandmother, Marie Anderson. The only information our family has is
the following:

Marie Anderson  Born: 5-27-1861
"Rorose", Sweden (I'm thinking possibly Røros, Norway as Sweden controlled
Norway during the time) Immigrated: either 1893 or 1898...hard to determine last number as her
husband's date strikes over hers
Resided in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota with her second husband, Ole M. Volden
(Walden/Wolden) during the 1930 U.S. census.
My parents have secured an award medal of some sort that belonged to Marie.
It was apparently for a sewing competition in Sweden....Jämtlands is printed
on it.
That's about all we have to go on. My grandmother, Anna Minnie Amanda
Anderson was born on 12/5/1898....and we were always told her father died
onboard the ship, shortly before she was born. According to church records
in Minnesota, Minnie's parents are recorded as: Mary Anderson and Per Nilsen
(Norsk)...have no information on him.
I'm lost as to where to go next. The medal provided some valuable
information, and it makes sense she may have been born in Røros, as it
pretty much parallels Jämtlands region of Sweden. I'm certain many Swedes
worked the mines in Røros during the time she was born...so it stands to
reason she was born there and then perhaps returned to Sweden with her
family, settling in Jämtlands. What do you think?

Hello!  Thanks again for allowing us to post our "Brick Walls".  I am so thankful for all the wonderful help.  Most of my questions have been cleared up.  The only one remaining is:

1. Did Inga's first husband, Nils Jonsson, die in Varmland, Sweden sometime between June of 1870 and 1873?  I am wondering if he died somwhere along the route from Treskog, Gunnarskog, Varmland, Sweden to the port in Oslo, Norway?

Thanks again to everyone for the wonderful help.  My new E-mail address is Shepard.Heather@comcast.net

Good Morning Jerry!

Thanks so much for posting my "Brick Wall".  I really appreciate it.  I have received some extraordinarily wonderful help already.  I would like to edit my information I sent before a bit if that is ok.
I am looking for any information on the family of Inga Cajsa Andersdotter.  I am new to Swedish research.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks so much for the help I have received already.

Inga Cajsa Andersdotter  Born: 24 May 1839 Abborrtjarn, Gunnarskog, Varmland, Sweden  Married: 27 Dec 1863 Gunnarskog
Husband: Nils Jonsson (Born: 25 Apr 1842 Grasmark)
I would like to find out if Inga was married before Nils Jonsson.  The man may have been named Per Jansson, and I'm guessing they would have been married in Grasmark, Varmland, Sweden before 1863.     Also I believe that Nils Jonsson passed away before 1870, but have been unable to find any record of his death.

Inga's Father: Anders Jonsson (Born: 15 Jun 1802 Gunnarskog)     Mother: Ingierd/Ingegerd Andersdotter (Born: 26 Aug 1799 Kymstad, Grasmark)
Half-sister: Maria Ersdotter (Born: May/Jun 1829 Grasmark)

I have received such wonderful help with Inga's pedigree back.  However, I have not been able to find a marriage record for her parents or their death.  Also, I have seen a birth record for Maria, but I was unable to read the writing for the birth day and month.

Inga's Children:  Ida Persdotter (Born: 3 Mar 1864 Elofstorpet, Gunnarskog)          Anders Nilsson (Born: 6 Aug 1866 Elofstorpet, Gunnarskog)
Nils Johan Nilsson (Born: 22 Feb 1869 Elofstorpet, Gunnarskog)

I'm guessing Nils Johan Nilsson died before 1870, but have been unable to find a death record.
Thanks again to Jerry for the site and for the wonderful help I have received already.  It means a great deal to me and my family.
Thank you, Heather Shepard (HeatherMNShepard@aol.com)

Hello!  Thanks Jerry for all of your help!
I am looking for any information on the family of Inga Cajsa Andersdotter.  I am new to Swedish research.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Inga Cajsa Andersdotter  Born: 24 May 1839 Abborrtjarn, Gunnarskog, Varmland, Sweden  Married: 27 Dec 1863 Gunnarskog
Husband: Nils Jonsson (Born: 25 Apr 1842 Grasmark)  (Note: I think she may have been married to someone else before Nils, but I am not sure.)
Emmigrated: June 1870?

Father: Anders Jonsson (Born: 15 Jun 1802 Gunnarskog)     Mother: Ingierd/Ingegerd Andersdotter (Born: 26 Aug 1799 Kymstad, Grasmark)
Half-sister: Maria Ersdotter (Born: May/Jun 1829 Grasmark)

I think Nils Jonsson and the youngest boy, Nils Johan Nilsson, died before 1870.  According to family records, Inga and Ida emmigrated and Anders stayed with relatives for a time until Inga had the money to send for him to emmigrate as well.

I'm looking for literally clue about my great grandfather who was born in 1849 in Bohuslan "county" Sweden.  Supposedly he was born in Lysikel.  He immigrated to the States in @ 1863-4 and settled in San Francisco, California.  I don't know if he went first to the east coast and traveled overland or went by ship all the way around S. America.
  His name in
America was William Matson, however he also shows up as William Madsen (on the 1880 Census).  According to our family stories he was orphaned as a child in Sweden (his parents may have both died in a fire and perhaps a church fire).  He lived either with an aunt/uncle or in an orphanage until shipping off to the States.  Our family literally knows zero about his parents, if he had siblings, etc.  Absolutely ANY help or clue would be invaluable.

Hi Jerry
Thank you very much for this great site, I got some terrific replies with
much needed information that I was after.

and what other children did they have?

Trying to find information for Anna Lovisa Andersson born Oct 7, 1866 in Kil parish, Södra Billinge, Örebro län, Närke, Sweden.  She was the child of Per Erik Andersson and Anna Cathrina (Kristina) Persdotter.  Anna Lovisa emigrated to America Jun 21, 189.  I don't know her final destination.  However, she had a sister Emilia Charlotta who emigrated to America Feb 13 1891.  She went to Marinette, Marinette County, Wisconsin.  November 15, 1892 Emilia married Nils Andersson in Marinette.   I can find no information for Anna Lovisa in Wisconsin or the near counties of Michigan.  She may, of course, have married.    Pat  Richardson richardson1@pacbell.net

I'm have been trying to find an immigration record for Nils Andersson (aka Nelson Anderson) who emigrated in 1882 or 1883.  Unfortunately I don't know the parish in Kristianstad lad from which he came.  Does anyone have a list of parishes in Kristianstad lan?  I could try them one by one if there aren't too many of them.
Does anyone know anything about the Kinnekulle region?  I read somewhere that is a plateau near
Lake Vannern, but now I'm unable to locate that reference.
Does anyone have a list of the parishes in Orebro lan, Narke, Sweden.
Thank you.  Pat Richardson    richardson1@pacbell.net

I am researching family in Sweden and as I am in Australia and unable to
read Sweden I find it hard to research. I have a Gustaf Pettersson born in
17 Dec 1835 Herrestad Östergötland Sweden and died in 4 Nov 1902 somewhere
in Sweden he married Elisabet Landroth she is the person I like some more
information about. She was born in 27 Sep 1847 Maria parish Stockholm Sweden
and died in 21 Jan 1932 somewhere in Sweden, I am not sure if her parents
may be Sven Landroth and wife Anna Birgitta. I was told she was possibly
adopted. Her two sons Karl and Svante took on her surname when they
immigrated to Australia. Also her daugther Elsa Pettersson who married
Mauritz Anderson their son Bengt also took on the Landroth surname. Any
information on Elisabet Landroth, (full name birth marriage and death
details would be great). I have a Gosta (name could be spelt wrong) Landroth
son of Elsa Horlin and Svante Gustaf Erick Landroth (he is Gustaf Pettersson
and Elisabet Landroth's son). Elsa died in childbirth 18th June 1908 having
Gosta. Svante and Elsa only had the one son Gosta. Svante immigrated to
Australia leaving Gosta behind with relatives. Full name and bdm details on
Gosta would be great. Any information on the Landroth, Pettersson and
Andersson families and their children I would love to have for my family
tree. Thank you Maggie   anozzie@hotmail.com

I hope you get this message and then you can ammend your website inthe way you see fit.
I must be the success story of the century.  Your website has once again put me in touch with another
wonderful person Maggie Andersson and she has found out information for me to the end that I now
have my family tree back to the 1275s yes that is correct 1275s the family has been thoroughly documented
my forebear Magnus having been noted as GONE TO AUSTRALIA so I am another link in the chain and
will be filling in those blanks for the society that has all my family tree documented.  I guess that means
that I need no further help at this moment in time....UNLESS  someone out there can take me back to

Hello Jerry,
Thanks for providing this "brick wall" service.

I am trying to find any other information on a relative born in Lilla Gälleberg, Daretorp Parish, Skaraborg Län.  I am trying to find information for an approximate 11 year period.  Where he was living and when he came to the United States.

Karl August Adamsson (Johansson) B: May 27, 1844

Father: Adam Johansson, B: July 4, 1808  Nykyrka, Skaraborg Län,  D: November 11, 1854, Lilla Gälleberg, Daretorp, Skaraborg Län.

Mother: Inga Maria Larsdotter (Sandberg),  B: November 1, 1815, Lilla Gälleberg, Daretorp, Skaraborg Län.

They had exit papers to come to the U.S.A. in 1854, but then Adam died and they had to cancel the trip. They may have moved to Skarstad Parish (or farm??) in 1860.  According to U.S. census records from Chicago, Ill., Karl, now Carl August Sandberg, Came to the U.S. in 1871.  I am trying to verify if this is the same person.  If I could find some record of where he left from and what ship he came on and if he traveled with anyone else and what date he left, it would be a great help.

Thank you to anyone who can help me out.   Scott Sanders                Searching for Sandbergs          ibe1swede@msn.com

Hello,
I am would like to find out who the parents are of my Grandfather, Jan Fredrik Johansson born in Nysund,
Orebro. (Nysunda in Narke?)  He was born there July 10th, 1861 and died Oct. 1936.  Jan (My father said it was Jon) married Brita Andersdotter June 1, 1884.  They had 14 children.  After Brita died, Father Jon came to the USA in 1923 with my father 12 yrs old and a twin son Erik and daughter Irma.  Grandpa Jon stayed in the USA until 1933,  then he went back to Sweden to draw his retirement ( so my Father said).  My grandfather is buried in Arbra where they had lived, I have a picture of his tombstone, it says:

STENHUGGAREN    JOHN FREDRIK JOHANSSON

1861-1936.  We know he had one sister Molly who had come to the USA also.  But know nothing else about his family.  Thank you for any information on Jan's parents and sibblings.          Merlaine Fredricks Fuller       candmfuller@netzero.net

I am trying to find more information on my Swedish great grandparents and have not had much success.  My grandparents were;
Axel Alfred Hvitfelt- born 9-4-1855 in Vastra Parish, Sweden.  He moved from St. Jacob's parish in
Stockholm to Turku, Finland on 16-6-1884, then moved to Kaarina parish Finland on 13-01-1900.  Axel married my grandmother Amanda Johanna Sjoblom in Turku on 21-7-1895.
Amanda was born in Maaria parish on 22-12-1860 and died in Turku on 16-11-1943.
I am particularly interested in finding out more about grandfather Axel Hvitfelt's father, possibly by obtaining the Swedish birth certificate of Axel.  Any new information would be much appreciated.

Jerry,
I am looking for my great grandmother's information. I have some information on her. She was born Johanna Caroline Olson on June 23rd 1857 in Grimeton, Halland, N, SE. She emigrated in May of 1884. She immigrated on May 8th 1884 to New York from Grimeton, Sweden. She married Alfred Johan Eliasson Andersson he also went by Johan Alfred Eliasson. He was born April 28th 1860 in Grimas, Grimeton, Halland, N, SE. He was baptized on April 29th 1860 in Grime ton, Halland, N, SE,
He was living from 1862-1876 in Hult #2, Grimeton, Halland, N, SE. What does this mean? Is it like a section of a county? He emigrated May of 1884 and immigrated May 1884 from Grimeton, Sweden to New York. I am assuming he immigrated at the same time as My great grandmother did on May 8th 1884. I believe they were married before 1884 in Sweden. Not sure where they were actually married though.
I have some information on my great grandfather but my brick wall starts at Johanna Caroline Olson. I do not have her parents names or information. I have been searching for 16 years for any information on Johanna or her family.
I now am trying to find out information on health issues with my ancestors. I do know that Alfred or Johan's family had alot of auto immune problems. I have been diagnosed with the same. So I have been on the search for family members.

I will THANK YOU for any help you can give to me in advance.   Regards,   Paula W   From the Great Pacific Northwest   Washington State USA

Hi, I am looking for information on my grandparents.  My grandfather went by Swan Anderson, but it could have been Svanti in Sweden.  I have
been told that he was born in 1870 in Skane, Sweden.  My grandmother's name was Anna Charlotte Nilsson, although some documents in the USA say
that it was Nelson.  I think that Swan and Anna came to New York on the ship Teutonic and it is thought that they entered through Ellis Island
December 24, 1891.  I have been unable to obtain any passenger lists for that time.  They were married June 30, 1892 in Superior Wisconsin.  Swan
died in Stockton, California January 29, 1945 and Anna died in Patterson, California May 15, 1940.  They are both interred in
Patterson, California. If anyone has information on my grandparents, I would should love to hear from you.  Thanks, Bud (Alder) Anderson.

UPDATE: 11/01/2004

The National Archives have no record of the ship Teutonic, or any other
ship, coming in to Ellis Island December 24, 1891.  I had been told that
was the date that my grandfather and grandmother, Anna Charlotte Nilsson
(maybe Anna Charlotta Nilson) had arrived in the USA from Sweden.
Additional information that I have received on Swan is that he had army
service in Sweden  If anyone has any suggestions as to how I might
proceed now I would sure appreciate the help.

Jerry, I have a new email address.  Would you please change it to
aldera26@sbcglobal.net    Thanks, Bud Anderson

Searching for Swedish seamen.

Frantz Edvard Brandtberg jumped ship in New Orleans, LA. in February, 1847.  He was second mate on the ship, David Carnegie that departed from Göteborg, SE.  He was born in 1827.
Frank Bredberg shows up in Red Wing, Goodhue, MN. in 1856. He was born March 25, 1827 in Göteborg, Bohus, Vastergotland, SE. I do not have any records of him before 1856.  I wonder if this is the same person, as Frantz Brandtberg.

Thank you for providing this service.

My question is related to a birth place which was noted while looking at the
Norway Census information.  This would be my great-great grandfather.  His
name was Anders Arnesen.  He is listed on the Kristiania 1900 Census as being
born in Ærtmark Sverige in the year 1837.  I had looked for this "place" and
could not locate it.  Upon further investigating and research, found that
maybe the census information may have not spelled it correctly and that it
could be possibly be Ärtemark.  I just wanted to know if anybody else could
verify this information or had a similar experience with this same mistake?

Thank you and I appreciate any help.   beetle7@att.net

Hi - I am looking for any information on my great grandparents, Anna Hanson (Handsdotter) Born 28 October 1859 in Flatrud, Tisselskog, Alvsborg, Sweden, died 24 May 1928 in Rockford, IL. She married 3 July 1890 to Carl George Signell (son of Adolf Frederick Samuelson) also born in Sweden. Carl was born 15 October 1865 in Vadstena, Ostergotland, Sweden. He died 31 May 1932 in Rockford.  My Grandmother said her father was very well educated and brought with him from Sweden an ivory chess set.  I know he immigrated 30 March 1888.  Grandma also said Anna was 19 years old when she came to America which would be 1878 with her 9 year old daughter Amy but Amy's birthdate is December 6, 1883, which would make their immigration date 1892.  Anna's parents were Hans Olsson and Anna Lisa Andsdotter.  Any help with this continuing problem would be very much appreciated.
I can be contacted at Jamey1334@aol.com        Thanks so much.  Carol Gustafson Divan

I am looking for information on the following ancestors from Sätila, Ålvsborg, Sweden. I have received some data, but have not been able to locate birth parish for Daniel.
Daniel Roos Soldier: 14/5/1774 - 1833
married: 8/12/1807
Elin Svensdotter: 4/19/1783 - 14/12/1851

Daniel Ros/Roos was a soldier in Ramhulta, Sätila. I do have his military service data for the time he was there ( 1806-04-30 to 1827-08-29). Prior to this he served 12 years in the fleet of the army at the Gothenburg Squadron. This data was extracted from "Marks Kompanis indelta soldater, Kungl Ålvsborg Regemente" by Karl Engström 1997. It also states that he was born ca 1774 in the county of Skaraborg.

Any help finding his birth parish would be greatly appreciated. I just don't know what to do next!

I am looking for ancestors of my great grandmother Bernadine Swanson.  Married name is Johnson.  She also had a nickname: Bella.   She was born in Sweden...I believe somewhere in Halland, Sweden and came to USA about 1887-88 to Clearfield County, PA in the Brisbin area. Born August 15, 1860 Died January 7, 1940 in Houtzdale, PA. Married Benjamin Johnson in Houtzdale on April 20, 1891. Found their marriage license in the Clearfield County Courthouse...her parents names are listed as Swan and Ivenborg Swanson.  That is all I know about her parents...would like to be able to go further back on her parents and great grandparents and also if any siblings.  Would also like to know where she was born exactly and in what parish and possibly someday find what port she left from and the name of the ship.

Hi.  For some time now I have been trying to break into the walls of the
Svedine family.  Specifically, I have been trying to find information on my
grandmother Pauline Theresa Frederica Svedine, born in Gotenborg, Sweden 7
Mar 1892.  Siblings I know of were Henry, Fritz, Hulda, Linnea and Amy.  A
brother Karl died as a child.  If anyone knows anything about this part of
the Svedin/Svedine family, please contact me at either jhatley@pullman.com
or hatleynj@wsu.edu.

This is what I know:  Morten Olafsen Lund was born ca, 1606. Place of birth may have been in the Trondheim area of Norway. In 1626 he was a student with Malmo school and entered into the university of Copenhagen, Denmark where he studied theology under the name Martinius Olai Nidroensis. In 1631 he was named res Kap. in Beistad, N. Trondelag, Norway. In1640 he was the vicepastor to Stod in N.Trondelag, Norway until his death in 1657. My suspicion is that the Lund family came from some where in Skaane, Sweden since that is where he went to school prior to entering the university of Copenhagen. Excellent pre-theology schools were available in Trondheim , Norway, and one should think that he would have studied there as the custom was for those preparing for the University of Copenhagen. I have hit a brick wall. There is no evidence of his parents in Trondelag, Norway. Any help in finding my roots in Sweden will be most welcome.  Obert Lund, Gold Canyon, Arizona, USA.. Re: Brick Wall on Zacheus Rickard Leontin Johansson born 1890

This gentlemen appears to be my grandmother's half-brother. He emigrated in
1923, from Stockholm, but was born in the Timra, Sunsvall area, son of Anders
Peter Johansson and Kristina Elisabet Svensson. He came to Pennsylvania to
visit his half-sister, Elvira Louisa Hellman. Their were five or six other
siblings, with all the first names beginning with the letter Z. The "Z" children, as
I have come to refer to them, were all children of the second marriage. My
mother remembers an uncle visiting around 1923, but she does not know what
happened to him. I do not know whether he returned to Sweden, may have moved west
(California), or was killed. My mother thought he was injured in a motorcycle
accident or fought in World War 1. I would appreciate any assistance in locating
him.     Cjbbish@aol.com                 NO NAME WITH E-MAIL............

My brick wall concerns the location of the birthplace of my Grandfather Janne Edvard Carlsson (John Edward Carlson) who emigrated from Sweden at the age of 17 in 1889.  His pastor's exhibition states that he came from the parish of Vastra Ryd, Ostergotland, Sweden.  It also says that his home was in Carlberg.  I cannot find any reference to a location called Carlberg in Vastra Ryd.  His father's name was also John Edward and his mother was Anna Charlotta.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.             Gene Carlson       Gene Carlson

Hello, I really am at a brick wall which stops me from trying to search for my grandfather, Charles Carlson who was born in Sweden 1861-1865.  Unfortunately he got this name when he got his first paycheck in USA.  We do have a table he made which he signed as Charleson.  I think one clue would be that he supposedly learned his boiler maker trade in Sweden.  Also, a clue to his parents might be the names of his children whose names were Alberta Alvida Bertina, Estelle, Carl and Oscar Emil.

According to family lore, he was 16 when he emigrated as a stow away.  According to his obit he went to Chicago for three years, then he went to Washington and finally ended up in Moorhead, MN and Fargo, ND.  Family lore said he walked across the Rocky Mountains.  Family lore said he had a brother who was a banker in Chicago, Illinois or Detroit, Michigan but his obit only mentioned that he had two brothers and one sister in Sweden.

So, I'm wondering if his children's names could possibly be from a certain area in Sweden.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.  Beverly Carlson      DOKKE@aol.com

Hi,
My brick wall is my great great grandmother, who
emigrated from somewhere in Sweden to Bornholm, Denmark, sometime before
about 1828. The first record of her I can find is in the Danish census of
1855, when the family lived in Hasle on Bornholm. She was listed as KAREN
PEDERSDATTER, age 24, born in Sweden. No town is given. Her husband was Hans
Peter Nielsen, age 26, born in Østermarie, Bornholm. In the 1860 census, she
was listed as Karen Nielsen, and in the 1870 and 1880 censuses she was
listed as Karen Pedersen. I assume her name in Sweden was Karen PETERSDOTTER
or maybe PERSDOTTER, and her birth date was about 1830. The children of Hans
Peter and Karen were: Hansine Petrea, b. ca 1853, Lauritz Olsen, b. ca 1857,
Mathias Vilhelm, b. 1862, Hans Nicolai, b. ca 1869, Marie Karoline, b. ca
1875, and Sejsine Karin, b. ca 1878.         Thank you!     Carla Corin          cw_corin@hotmail.com

Hello
I am looking for relatives of three people who emigrated from  Sweden to North America.
The first is my aunt Edla Gunilla Tallberg. (Married Benson), born on May 29th of 1894 in Karlskoga, Värmland, SWEDEN.
She emigrated to North America in 1911, and died in Illinois in 1975.
The children’s names were Marshall Benson and Doris Tamburo.

Another relative I am seeking is my maternal grandmother’s sister Maria Charlotta Karlsdotter, (Married Rehn)
born on May 12th of 1884 in Karlskoga. She emigrated on April 22nd of 1904. Her children were named Paul Rehn, Florence Sheffer and Dorothy Baur.

The third emigrant I hope to find is another sister of my grandmother’s, named Anna Lovisa Karlsdotter (Married Johnson) born on April 28th of 1890, in Karlskoga.
Emigrated on August 30th of 1907. Her children were named Harry Johnson and Lawrence Johnson.

I believe they all lived in or nearby Chicago.
Thankful for any advice and information (Tack så mycket!)

Greetings,    Thank you for providing this service.  I have two brick walls.

1.  My first brick wall concerns my great-grandmother:
Maria Skoglund was born May 02, 1890, but I do not know anything more about her other than that she married David Modén (b. December 04, 1886 in Stora Kil, Varmland, Sweden).  They emigrated to the US in 1911.  I believe Maria's father's name was Peter, but I am not certain even of that.  I would dearly love to know who her parents were and where she was born, whether she had siblings or not, et.

2.  My second brick wall concerns the family name Modén.  The name has its earliest appearance in my ancestry when Jon Larsson (b. 1758, d. 1810 in Treskog, Gunnarskog, Värmland) married Kerstin Olsdotter (b. 1760 in Fjall, Eda, Värmland).  They had four children who seem to have taken the name Modén as their surname, supposedly they took it from somewhere in their ancestry.
The children that I know of are:
Märta Modén (1785-1819)
Olof Modén (1719-1852)
Lars Modén (1793-1823)
Per Modén (1799-1855)
I would like to learn more about the family name Modén, where it originates, possible connections to living Modéns, and why the children took this name as their surname.    Thank you,    V. Peterson    victoria06@sprynet.com

Dear Mr Longstrom,
I've been reading your website for a couple of weeks now, with great interest, as I'm starting to pursue a long-lost great-
grandfather by the name of Frederick Benson/Bengtsson? who was one of those sailors who jumped off an American ship (the Texas) in Melbourne
during the goldrushes, perhaps around 1856-7,we think. On his Australian marriage certificate he lists his parents as Charles Benson and Joanna
Elleson, farmer, of Gothenborg, no other information is available except that he had a brother, and as an illegal immigrant covered his tracks
for fear of being caught. No doubt this story is a common  one.

From the Bohuslan- Yahoo group, I've learned that one must first locate the parish, however in Melbourne at our
genealogical societies we have no access (as far as I know) to the CD Emigranten, until such times as the next publication becomes available.
I would really appreciate your thoughts on my "brick wall" - is this a hopeless case? I did attempt to list this
on your site, with no success, as I'm not the greatest computer operator in existence......
thank you for your time,Cheryl R. Benson.  crbenson@telstra.com

I can't seem to get over my brickwall! I am desparately searching for information about my grandfather.
All I know of him is that his name was Carl G.Svenson.
On his merchant navy record card it says that he was born in Stockholm ( not sure if this is city, or surrounding area) on 15 August 1879.  He was 6' 1" tall with fair hair and had a star tattooed on his forearm. He was a crew member on British merchant ships from the early 1900's onwards and often gave his home address as Karlskrona. He must have met my grandmother in Newport, South Wales (UK) in 1920 as my mother was born in April 1921.
Carl Svenson registered her birth himself and returned for her baptism in 1922.  However my grandmother was married to someone else and my mother never knew  her father, Carl Svenson. My mother and grandmother are now dead so there is no one to ask for any other details.. I have been trying for quite a few years but on so little information it is very difficult. Please if anyone thinks they may know of him or his family or has any other ideas that I can try, please contact me at:
sue.irvine1@ntlworld.com   I would very much appreciate any help.   Thank you,  Sue Irvine    (England)

I am searching for information and tomake contact with descendants of my
great aunt born ESTER ELVIRA FLODMAN 5 October 1890 in Viby, Arboga
landsf., Västmanland, Sweden. Her mother was MATILDA FLODMAN; father
Unknown. ESTER emigrated with her mother in 1899. According to the 1910
Census, Ester is listed as "ESTHER PETERSON" Adopted Daughter of (her
aunt and uncle) Victor and Augusta Peterson, in Hiteman, Monroe County,
Iowa. Esther was listed as born in Iowa. So her Descendants may not know
she emigrated. A FLODMAN family member in Sweden (who died within the
last year) indicated that it was known that ESTHER had married (probably
early in the 1910's, location unknown) and had two or three children.
Unfortunately, no surviving family members know ESTHER's married name.
It is believed that ESTHER and her husband lived in a sod house or
dugout for some years in "the PLAINS STATES" during the 1910's,
according to relatives in Sweden. ESTHER had a sister, OLGA MATILDA
FLODMAN,my grandmother,  who emigrated in about 1912 and a brother IVAR,
who never left Sweden, settling in Eskilstuna, Södermanland, where
several of his descendants now live. Hoping a descendant of ESTHER who
may have a piece to the puzzle might recognize any of this story. Please

I am searching for the ancestry of Anna Maria LARSSON.  I believe she was
born in Göteborg on March 6, 1888.  I don't know what parish.  According to
her records in Massachusetts, her parents were Patrick LARSSON and
Charlotte ERIKSON.  I don't know if Patrick was Patrick in Sweden or the
US.  Anna came to the US in 1901 according to the 1910 and 1920
census.  She always told her daughter (my mother) that she (Anna) came
alone at age 13.  Anna went to Maine when she arrived in the US and her
father was supposed to meet her.  He had come to the US four or five years
before Anna.  Patrick never showed up to meet her, and was never heard from
again.  Anna's mother and siblings remained in Sweden. (as far as we
know).  Sometime between 1910 and 1931, Anna's mother Charlotte died in
Göteborg.  My mother remembers Anna receiving a letter with a black border,
telling Anna of her mothers death.  Anna corresponded with a brother in
Sweden, but no letters can be found.  A picture of Anna just before she
left Sweden, and a picture of her brother and his three children, Julle,
Elin and Elsa, can be seen at
<http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/7401/4thlink.html>   I found an
Anna Maria Larsson who came to the US in 1901, age 13, born March 7, 1888,
and she came alone.  She was headed for Chicago, IL.  I have checked some
areas of Chicago in the 1900 census, but don't find any Patrick Larsson.  I
wrote to Sweden, and received a response that this is not the daughter of
Patrick and Charlotte (even though the similarities are amazing!).  This
Anna's parents were Janne Larsson and Cecelia Johnson.  And this Anna was
born in Malmö.  Can anyone help me find my Anna's parents and
siblings?  Thanks.

Hi
I am researching my family history and currently working on the Medin branch of the family.  I have hit a brick wall!  My Great Grandmother burned photos, cards and letters, her address book and many other papers.  I would love to find any relatives and/or information.  The following is what I know about Mia Medin.

Mia Medin was born February 7, 1886-8 at Fälkhöping, Sweden to Swante Edward Medin and Hilma Emmeranch Anderson (Andersdotter).  Swante and Hilma were both born at Grönahög, Sweden?  Hilma died giving birth to Mia.  It is unknown if Mia had older siblings.  Swante married again and had a son Erik, whose mother also dies giving birth (if other children were born before Eric was is unknown).  Mia thought Erik was very funny.  Swante married yet again.  Mia did not get along with this stepmother. So at the age of 17 (1903-5) she left home for Stockholm, Sweden.  She lived in Stockholm and worked as a governess.  In 1906, aboard the ship Baltic, Mia came to the USA and through Ellis Island where her name was changed to Maria (she used Mia to her family).  She traveled with an aunt whose name is unknown.  Mia ended up in Chicago, IL (possibly had relatives living there) where she married Anton Nielsen.  Anton was from Denmark.  The marriage date is unknown.  Mia’s brother Erik Medin came to the USA aboard the ship United States.  He also came through Ellis Island.  The Passenger Record at Ellis Island says Erik came from Svenljunga, Sweden.  No other information about Erik is known.  Mia and Anton had one son Edward Christian Nielsen born November, 1911 at Chicago, IL.  Sometime after this they moved to Spencer, WI.  Anton was a carpenter and wood worker.  He built a farm out side of Spencer with a round barn. Some time before Edward died in 1949 Anton and Mia built a house in the town of Spencer and sold the farm.  Mia died in 1971.  Anton had passed 25 years before.    My mother, Edward’s daughter, remembers Swedish relatives coming to visit (sometime in the mid 1940’s?).  The relative’s last name was Wall.

Hi Jerry!
I am looking for a missing relative who was supposed to go to Chicago, but seems to have disappeared.  There is a rumor that she wrote to Sweden from Iowa, Louisiana.  She is Johanna Matilda Holtzberg and her son, Aron Holtzberg.  They left Sweden in 1869, I believe...headed for Chicago.

Then there is the branch from Grinstad, Sweden named Holm.  According to the cousin I found there, there are only 4 relatives living in Sweden from that side.  There used to be a mob...lots of kids.  I find it hard to believe they all left Sweden!

There was a cousin Albert Reinhold Nelson, who changed his name to Nelson Reynolds and worked for the railroad in Indiana.  He is remembered to have married a woman named May from England.

The Cook County death records office can't seem to find my great grandmother in their files.  Her name here seems to have been Sophia Nelson, but she married as Fredrika Sophia Holtzberg in Åby, Kalmar, Sweden to Sven Gustaf Nelsson who ended up as Sven Nelson in Chicago.  They found his but not hers...

Then there is Wendla Christina Holtzberg who married Carl "Sturre" Olsen (Olson) in Chicago, I have a picture even, but no death information on her...only on him.  Did they have kids?  Did they move to the burbs?

She was a furniture craftsperson of note and is said to have won a prize at the Columbian Exposition or the Chicago World's Fair or Pan American Exposition...mother doesn't remember which...for something she entered.  She and Johanna (above) built furniture in Sweden until their father died and the company had to be closed as women weren't allowed to own businesses then in Sweden.  A cousin has found a book with at least one photo and a short biography on them in Sweden.
I would love to own a piece of their furniture...

Please add my name to your new research:
Additions,

I am STILL looking for living descendents of Jonas Larsson.  When I wrote about my search 2 years ago I did not know that illness would change my plans and I would not go to Sweden.  However, I am STILL looking for my father's (Efraim) family.  I know that Vattneröd is now owned by Virginia Anderson or her heirs.  I know that before Karl and Hanna passed, in the 1960's, a relative visited them at the farm and at the nursing home where Hanna died.   Also, could you please change my e-mail address?  It is now vivian2@myexcel.com  Thank you very much.

1. I am looking for descendents of  JONAS LARSSON, freeholder and member of the church council, Vattneröd,  Sanne Parish,  Bohuslän, VästraGotaland, born 1832-11-29

2.  His wife, BEATA OLSDOTTER, born 1838-12-03

They had four children: Karl Johan (who lived on the farm until his death), Anders Johan, Efraim, and Hanna.
Three of their children  did not emigrate but had no children.  My father, Efraim, emigrated to the US and had 3 children.  I would very much like to contact anyone from the Sanne area who are descendents of Jonas' or Beata's SIBLINGS.
Perhaps a neighbor near the farm would have roots  that go back to the 1800's and know the history of the Larsson or Olsson families.

I feel a little urgency in this matter because I have just celebrated my 80th birthday, plan a trip to Sweden soon, and would like to add this information to my history.

I thank you, one and all, for all you have taught this latecomer (in years) newbie.

Samuel Edward LÅNGSTRÖM, Born February 16, 1834 in Naverstad parish, Bohus län Sweden, emigrated in 1854?
I am looking for anybody named "Samuel Edward"  or "Edward" that was
born in 1834 and came to the U.S.A.   The Swedish people used their middle name a lot of the time.  Therefore I am
probably looking for "Edward Longstrom".

Hannibal LÅNGSTRÖM, born April 21, 1858 in Naverstad parish,  Bohus län Sweden, emigrated in 1882.
A letter from him said he had a job with a painter.
I am now looking for a man named "Hannibal"  that was born in 1858 and was
a painter in the U.S.A.!!!

Magnus Michael LÅNGSTRÖM, born March 30, 1890 in Naverstad parish, Bohus län Sweden,  emigrated in 1906 from Göteborg Sweden to Silverton Colorado, was working in the mines there and then disappeared in apx. 1909.  Some reports say he was married & may have changed his name to ARMSTRONG??
I  found Magnus in the 1910 census living in a boarding home in Thermopolis Wyoming.  I will now look in Wyoming records for more info. I can not find him in the 1920 census.
I am now looking for anyone from Sweden that came to the U.S. and was born in 1890
that has the name "Magnus."
So, if someone reads this with an ancestor that had the first name

On April 1, 1881 (age 18)  Erik Magnus Jacobsson  & his sister Maja Lisa (Jacobsdotter) Morshare came to the USA. they left from Göteborg Sweden on the ship Rollo.  (picture on ships page)
In the 1900 census, we have found out that Erick Magnus Jacobson was living in the city of Kennedy, Tegner Township, Kittson County Minnesota, with his cousin, Eric Magnus Engelbert with his cousin, Eric Magnus Engelbert and his wife Freda and their children Anna, John, Maria, Carl (Charles) Elmer, Agnes, & John.

I can not find Erik after the 1900 census.   jelaz@cox.net         http://longstrom.com/swanson/

I am searching for information on my husband's grandfather, Lafve Mellblom, born 14 Feb. 1837 probably  near Stockholm. His wife was Cecelia ---b. about 1842.    It is possible he was a gardener.  I am not sure when they emigrated. but they had 5 children born in Sweden before arriving in Chicago, IL.  Any help would be appreciated.  Vanelda Mellblom vmellblom@earthlink.net
